Slow-Cooker Apple Butter

Makes: 8 cups or 8 half-pints
6 pounds medium apples, peeled and cored, then chopped or sliced into 1/2-inch pieces
1 cup packed Schnucks light brown sugar
3/4 cup Schnucks apple cider
1/2 cup Schnucks pure honey
2 teaspoons McCormick® ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon Schnucks ground cloves
1. Into 6-quart or larger slow cooker, add all ingredients and stir; cover and cook on low 12 hours, stirring once or twice, if desired.
2. With immersion blender, purée apple mixture to smooth, buttery consistency. (If a thinner texture is desired, cook, uncovered, 1 hour longer.)
Each 2 tablespoons: about 45 calories, 0 g total fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 0 mg sodium, 11 g carbohydrate, 1 g fiber, 10 g sugars, 0 g protein
If an immersion blender is not available, apple butter can be pressed through a fine mesh strainer or puréed in small batches in a food processor or blender.
Enjoy giving as gifts by canning this apple butter right from the slow cooker into half-pint jars or 8-ounce jelly jars leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Use the water bath method to process as instructed on the package for the jars. Using a mixture of apple varieties gives the apple butter more complex flavors.
